The all-new Mazda CX-70 is the 2-row sibling to the CX-90 introduced a year earlier. It continues Mazda’s now-trademark combination of premium looks and feel for a mainstream price.
The CX-70 comes with a couple of powertrain options: a 280-horsepower turbocharged 6-cylinder and a more powerful 340-hp variant. A plug-in hybrid is also available, but we handle that one separately. While it’s a handsome-looking midsize SUV competing with the Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport, Toyota Crown Signia, and Honda Passport, it’s what is on the inside that counts.

Passenger Room and Comfort
The CX-70 offers plenty of space for five adults. There’s little difference in the headroom between the front and second rows, while the second row does get a more-than-reasonable 39.4 inches of legroom, which is in line with other vehicles in its segment.
To ensure that everyone is comfortable, there is tri-zone climate control with a pollen filter to ensure everyone gets to be as warm or cold as they want while potentially avoiding irritants of the spring and summer allergy season. Those in the front row enjoy power seats that are also heated. Second-row passengers can enjoy some privacy — or relief from the sun — with retractable window shades as they relax in the reclining seats.
Once you move into higher trim levels, buyers can choose to add ventilated front seats and heated second-row seats clad in Nappa leather.
Features and Tech
Mazda made sure the CX-70 offers plenty of the technology folks crave in a premium midsize SUV, starting with the standard 12.3-inch display. The infotainment functions are also voice-controlled, making it easy for set the cabin up with the right music or temperature. Buyers also get Alexa Built-in and a wireless phone charger as well as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard equipment.
The CX-70 lineup also offers a 12-speaker Bose surround sound system with Centerpoint and AudioPilot, except in the base model. In all trims, there are four USB-C ports in the vehicle: two each in the front and back.
The standard i-Activsense suite of safety features includes: Smart Brake Support, blind-spot monitoring, Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop & Go, driver attention monitoring, lane-keeping assist with lane departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and a rear-view monitor with static guide lines.
Materials and Design
Mazda vehicles offer a premium feel at an affordable price, and that is never more apparent when it comes to the materials used in the cabin of the CX-70. With available contrast gray metallic inlays, red Nappa leather, and red stitch detailing, it’s not difficult to believe you’re riding in a much pricier vehicle.
The Preferred and Premium trims feature leather-trimmed seats along with a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. Once you move to the Premium Plus trim and beyond, Nappa leather becomes the seating material of choice
Cargo Room and Flexibility
The CX-70 provides plenty of room for not just people, but the stuff they need. With 39.6 cubic feet of space behind the second row, there is room for several bags or suitcases, even sets of golf clubs. If you put the second row down flat, it expands to a cavernous 75.3 cubic feet — and you can use the remote folding rear seats to access it.
The CX-70 also features a clever use of unused space to create new storage options, including a sub-trunk that can hold items vehicle owners want to keep from prying eyes. There are other small compartments to keep items from rolling around the cargo area, along with hooks for bags and other equipment.
