In 2023, the company issued an escalating series of recalls of its Ford Escape Hybrid and Escape Plug-in Hybrid SUVs from model years 2020-2023, Maverick Hybrid pickups from model years 2022-2023, and Lincoln Corsair Plug-in Hybrid SUVs from model years 2021-2023.
The vehicles could suffer an engine failure, but keep moving due to their hybrid electric engines. Fuel vapor could build up under the hood, risking an engine fire.
Dealers made several mechanical engine modifications and updated software to fix the problem. But Ford has since learned that the method dealers used to update software could sometimes report success even when it failed.
Some owners may be driving vehicles that didn’t receive the complete software update. Ford can identify them, and says it has a new upload process that should let dealers verify success. So the company needs owners to bring some of the vehicles back for a second software update.
