Volvo recalled 14,014 vehicles because they can lose braking power in certain drive modes.

Recalled models include some, but not all, examples of the:

    • 2020-2026 Volvo XC90 plug-in hybrid (PHEV)
    • 2022-2026 Volvo XC60 PHEV
    • 2023 Volvo C40 Recharge
    • 2023 Volvo XC40 Recharge
    • 2023-2025 Volvo S60 PHEV
    • 2024 Volvo XC40
    • 2024-2025 Volvo V60 PHEV
    • 2025 EC40
    • 2025-2026 Volvo EX40

Volvo PHEVs and electric vehicles (EVs) have a driving mode sometimes labeled “B mode” and sometimes “one-pedal driving.” It allows drivers to use just the accelerator pedal, moving by pressing it and braking by lifting it.

Volvo has discovered that if a customer in B mode or one-pedal driving coasts downhill for at least one minute and 40 seconds, they can “experience a temporary loss of braking functionality.”

It’s a software issue, the company says. Dealers will correct it with a software update. These vehicles can’t receive software updates over the air, so owners must bring them in to have the patch installed. Software updates are often quick service appointments.

    Recall repairs are always free.

Automakers recall many cars to fix safety defects, sometimes more than once. They try to contact every owner to ask them to bring the vehicle in for repair, but they rarely reach them all. Millions of vehicles on American roads need free recall repairs. To find out if your car is one of them, check the easy VIN tool at our recall center.
