Lamborghini Just Unveiled a Pure V-8 Powered Temerario Race Car

The new Lamborghini Temerario is a hybrid supercar unveiled last year, with production set to start soon for what will be the Huracán’s replacement. As such, it will also need to prove itself on the track, like with the non-hybrid race car version Lamborghini showed Friday at Goodwood.

The Temerario GT3 is the first race car based on the Temerario, and surely not the last. The chassis is aluminum, and under the hood is the 4.0-liter V-8 engine that will feature in the road-going version of this car, but this time tuned for racing and without electric assistance.

The car is built for GT3 racing, as its name implies, which means that it was built to handle less-than-perfect conditions.

“We are confident that it will be competitive in terms of lap time, while also rewarding to drive in a wide range of conditions, including at night and in the rain,” Rouven Mohr, Lamborghini’s chief technical officer, said in a statement. “The development team has worked hard to ensure the car has a wide operating window, and that the teams are better able to work on it.”

The V-8 makes 550 horsepower, which is less than the 800 horsepower the engine makes in the road-going version—but that was done to comply with GT3 racing regulations, along with taking out the hybrid components. The engine is mated to a six-speed transverse gearbox. The suspension and bodywork have been adapted for racing, too, for fast assembly and disassembly. Numerous other tweaks for racing include changes to the interior with the help of two Lamborghini factory drivers, and the flow to the gas tank has been sped up.

Lamborghini did not name a price for the Temerario GT3, but said it planned to make the car’s racing debut at the 12 Hours of Sebring next March. It has a big legacy to live up to with the Huracán, the racing version of which, called the Huracán GT3, won 96 titles, according to Lamborghini. Lamborghini also sold dozens of Huracán GT3s to racing customers, many of whom will likely buy the Temerario GT3 as well.
