It’s easy to assemble and runs at just 20 decibels on low, which is quieter than most refrigerators. 

During testing, we were impressed by pretty much everything about the TurboPoly 508S. Though fans don’t technically cool the air, this one definitely made our upstairs vaulted-ceiling bedroom much more comfortable. The 3D oscillation seemed to distribute air better than side-to-side models, which made the entire space feel more pleasant (and it’s also somewhat hypnotic to watch). The Shark’s 32-inch-wide bar-style design features dual adjustable vents that pivot, twist, and oscillate a full 180 degrees, giving you precise control over airflow direction. It has 10 speed settings plus specialty modes that can push air up to 80 feet across large rooms. It uses a special filter to remove airborne particles for cleaner air and has a magnetic remote control to help ensure you won’t lose it. 

Before testing, this fan sort of reminded us of a hair dryer, so we expected it to be loud but efficient. Turns out, we were partially correct: it was definitely efficient, though certainly not loud. At lower speeds, it’s almost silent, and the sound of the air pushing powerfully out of the blades really only became noticeable at higher speeds or on boost mode.

We liked the modern, minimalist design, though the wide bar does take up a bit of space in its horizontal position. However, the fact that you can pivot each end of the bar independently makes it worth it. It’s also a fair bit more expensive than most of the fans on our list, but it’s an excellent upgrade for those seeking precise control in a sleek package.

How We Tested the Best Oscillating Fans

The ideal way to find the best fans is to test them, so we started by researching almost 30 models before narrowing our testing group down to 10. To come up with our testing list, we considered airflow capacity, noise levels, build quality, settings and modes, size, and extra features. We chose everything from small desktop fans to large pedestal units, with both budget-friendly options plus those with state-of-the-art technology that comes at a higher price. 

When it came time to test, we focused on seven key areas: ease of assembly, performance on high and low speeds, noise across all settings, ease of cleaning, additional features, stability, and portability. We scored each fan on a scale of 1 to 5 for those tests, tallied the results, and awarded worthy fans a place on our list. 

What to Consider When Choosing an Oscillating Fan

While it’s essential to select the right type and size of oscillating fan for the job, finding a fan that produces adequate airflow is also crucial. Ahead, learn more about these and other features you’ll want to consider when selecting an oscillating fan. 

Type and Size

Oscillating fans come in a wide range of types and sizes. Most oscillating fans have blades that range in size from 12 to 18 inches. However, there are also compact oscillating fans with small 5-inch blades and tower-style fans that use multiple small impeller blades. Not all manufacturers publish the length from blade tip to blade tip, and some fans are labeled by the diameter of the fan enclosure. For consistency’s sake, for each fan we tested, we listed the diameter of its fan head, which is the cage that protects the fan blades.

• Tabletop: One of the most common types of oscillating fans, tabletop fans stand less than 2 feet tall with fan heads that range between 12 and 18 inches, so they are compact enough to sit on a nightstand or desktop. 
• Pedestal: A pedestal fan is a standing oscillating fan that has a large base and a telescoping pole that holds the head anywhere between 2 and 4 feet off the ground. This stand-alone design is an excellent option for larger spaces such as a workout room or workshop. 
• Tower: Instead of a fan head, a tower fan has impeller blades enclosed within a cylindrical housing, giving it its characteristic look. This design is not only sleeker and more attractive than a standard fan but also circulates air more evenly. 
• Wall-mounted: A wall-mount oscillating fan typically features a 12- to 16-inch fan head attached to a base that mounts to a wall. This design is a great option in rooms that don’t have the floor space for a desktop, tower, or pedestal-style fan. 

Airflow

Fans vary in the amount of airflow they create. A fan’s airflow is measured in the maximum cubic feet per minute of air the unit can move at its highest speed setting. Compact fans typically produce a CFM of around 400, while larger models can produce about 1,200 CFM.

Larger pedestal fans can produce 2,000 CFM or more. While CFM is a good way to evaluate a fan’s airflow, it’s not an available spec for all fans, as some fan manufacturers do not list the CFM ratings of their fans. 

Settings and Adjustability 

Oscillating fan designs allow users to control the fan’s speed and oscillation. Most fans have high, medium, and low speed settings. Higher-end models may have additional settings, such as a breeze mode, which adjusts the fan speed to simulate the intermittent airflow of wind. 

Oscillating fans typically have controls on the back of the fan head that allow you to turn the oscillating movement off and on. Some oscillating fans also have heads that can tilt up and down, allowing you to change the direction of the air. Most pedestal fans have telescoping poles that allow you to adjust the height of the fan head.

Noise 

Fans produce different levels of noise based on fan speed and the size of the motor. Generally speaking, fans that use small motors are quieter than fans that use blades. Also, expect larger fans to be noisier than smaller models. Most fans measure from 20 decibels on their lowest setting up to about 50 to 60 decibels on their highest setting. 

Some of the best oscillating fans use quiet technology with a lower noise level of between 15 and 45 decibels. While this type is a quiet fan well-suited for bedroom use, some people prefer fans that produce some white noise to help with sleep.

Additional Features

Some oscillating fans have additional features that add to their functionality. In addition to speed settings, some have programmable timers that shut off the fan after a certain number of hours.
