Tesla has issued a recall for 239,382 cars because a short circuit can leave their backup cameras useless.

Recalled models include some, but not all, examples of the:

Tesla tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that a recent software update, coupled with colder temperatures, can short out the power components feeding the camera.

The company knows of 887 warranty claims to date.

Tesla has responded with another over-the-air software update designed to prevent the power problem. However, the company says it is still “actively working to identify which affected vehicles, if any, experienced stress that may lead to the shorting failure condition.”

For owners that experience the failure, Tesla will replace the vehicle’s entire computer.

Recall repairs, by law, are free.

Carmakers try to notify the owners of recalled vehicles, but those efforts aren’t always 100% effective. To check if your car has any outstanding recalls, try our easy VIN check tool in our recall center.
