Wayfair dabbled in artificial intelligence (AI) search and discovery previously with its Decorify app in recent years — but its latest expansion of that pilot will use the name Muse.

Muse, which Wayfair announced on Feb. 11, features a Pinterest-style user interface that facilitates browsing for online shoppers, leveraging generative AI to suggest similar images and prompt users to view products with similar attributes. Those images include context and design, such as “Hamptons-inspired beach house” and “Scandinavian Hygge Style” that can be used to populate additional results.

Wayfair is No. 9 in the Top 1000 Database, Digital Commerce 360’s ranking of North America’s largest online retailers. It is also the largest Housewares & Home Furnishings online retailer in North America. Digital Commerce 360 projects that Wayfair’s online sales in 2025 will reach $11.42 billion.

Results shown by the Muse tool include direct links to products in Wayfair’s catalog. The furniture retailer suggests that shoppers describe the style of the room they wish to furnish. Then, it invites them to use Muse’s results to inspire further exploration. Users can also upload pictures of their own rooms to generate images of how their spaces might look when furnished with desired designs.

“At Wayfair, our goal is to make it easy to create a home that is just right for you, and Muse delivers on that promise,” said Fiona Tan, chief technology officer at Wayfair. “Leveraging generative AI, we aim to elevate our search experience to be the best in the home category — seamlessly blending inspiration and shopping — to reaffirm our position as the premier destination for all things home.”

    Wayfair’s use of AI

“The home category is heavily visual and highly personal, and most people want to start their home personalization journey by simply browsing for ideas,” said Shrenik Sadalgi, director of research and development at Wayfair. “Muse serves that need and is an endless inspiration engine giving customers the ability to spark an idea, bring their unique visions to life and even transform their existing spaces — all enabled by AI.”

Wayfair wants to build deeper relationships and relevance with its customers. That desire is part of a larger, ongoing turnaround effort at the company. For its fiscal third quarter, which ended on Sept. 30, 2024, Wayfair reported net revenue of $2.9 billion, showing a decline of 2.0% year over year. In addition, the company announced at the beginning of 2025 that it would exit the German market.

In October 2024, Wayfair launched a new customer loyalty program, intended to centralize benefits across its brands and incentivize repeat purchases among its shoppers.
