What the Heck Is a Garden Room? (And Why Is Everyone Talking About Them?)

These days, there are so many ways to enhance your outdoor space. From stunning landscape designs to the addition of a pool or other water features, our exteriors are becoming our sanctuaries more than ever before.

But what if we could bring this natural haven inside our homes? This is the intention of a garden room, and it’s no surprise they’re increasing in popularity every day.

What Is a Garden Room?

In case you’re new to garden rooms, it’s a fairly straightforward concept. Unlike a greenhouse, a garden room is an exterior structure that functions as a plant-filled room built for the sole purpose of relaxing.

“Garden rooms serve as a retreat to connect with nature without the hassle of a full home renovation,” says pro gardener Laura Janney.

Architect Cory Morris agrees, and says he believes they’re rising in popularity for a few key reasons. Garden rooms are ideal for anyone who feels most relaxed when surrounded by nature, but they’re also incredibly versatile. 

“They can be used for lounging, entertaining, dining, or simply as retreats in an area outside the home,” says Morris.

How to Create a Garden Room

As far as the structure itself goes, Morris says another perk of a garden room is that it’s a much easier project than a traditional extension. They’re quicker and more affordable, plus they can help your home in the long run.

“A well-designed structure enhances the look of a garden while also increasing property value,” says Morris.

He does suggest thinking carefully before diving into the project: You’ll want to check your local building regulations, and choose a spot that offers the best light and privacy so you can make the most of your garden room. Also consider how the garden room’s design relates or connects to your home.

“Planning in advance allows you to address any needs for electricity, automation, heating, or plumbing,” says Morris.

You can also consider your internal heating and cooling system, electrical needs, and ideal materials that work well for both indoor and outdoor living.

Gorgeous Plants Are a Must

Once you’ve built, converted, or established the physical structure of your garden room, Janney says it’s time to add your plants. She suggests low-maintenance plants that don’t require too much attention.

“Great choices to start off with are ZZ, snake plants, and pothos,” says Janney. “They thrive in a range of conditions, and can bounce back if they are neglected.”

If you prefer a little more effort and your garden room has great natural light, Janney says she also loves fiddle leaf figs, monsteras, and rubber plants for their statement-making beauty. 

“I always recommend to start off small and see how much time you can realistically commit to,” says Janney.

Beyond a few reliable houseplants, plant trends expert Katie Tamony suggests additional plants that thrive in your local climate, and choosing a wide, varied assortment for a truly lush feel. 

“One trend we are following is called green drenching,” says Tamony. “This focuses on a rising interest in soothing tones of green, interest in foliage, and texture to create spaces that are more serene.”

Of course, the beauty of a garden room is that it exists as a part of your garden—so the exterior landscaping is important, too. Depending on how the space is designed, Janney says you can incorporate your exterior plants to flow inside.

“Consider climbing plants,” she says. “Roses, hydrangeas and clematis make excellent choices and can really bring the outside in.” 

How to Decorate a Beautiful and Functional Garden Room

Once your garden room has been created and your plants have been arranged, it’s time to decorate it with whatever you feel will bring you joy, peace, and happiness.

“Natural materials, soft hues, and, of course, plenty of plants and fresh flowers in beautiful vases,” says Janney.

Because this is an external structure, Janney also suggests focusing on elements that work well in the off-season or at night, too. This includes an ambient lighting plan.

“String lights would be a must,” says Janney. “And I definitely would include a cosy area where I could lay down and read a book.”

Other things to consider are wind chimes, wireless speakers for music, and candlelight.
