IKEA Revives Discontinued Favorites — Designers Share What They’re Buying

There’s a reason IKEA remains a major preferred retailer for so many of us—from professional designers to people who just crave a comfortable, welcoming space. From the brand’s iconic pieces (hello, BILLY bookcase) to its cult following of IKEA hacks, we’re consistently excited and delighted to see what the Swedish staple has in store.

Naturally, when we heard about the sixth edition of their classic Nytillverkad collection which re-releases vintage designs, we couldn’t wait to know more.

Learn more about the collection, and which pieces designers can’t wait to get their hands on this month.

What Is the Nytillverkad Collection? 

The Nytillverkad collection is a curated collection that has set out to re-imagine a selection of the brand’s archived pieces and release them in new colors and materials. To learn more about the inspiration behind the line, we connected with interior designer Abbey Stark, who’s also the Home Furnishing Direction Leader at IKEA U.S.

“These beautiful, standalone pieces seamlessly fit into any environment and can be paired together to curate a bold, personalized style,” says Stark,

She also points out that one goal of the collection is to create an elevated, vintage aesthetic.

“With its bright colors, iconic shapes and contemporary materials, IKEA’s latest collection is a memorable one for me,” says interior designer Margaret Carroll. “The pieces feel both familiar and fresh, making it attractive and accessible to design enthusiasts and everyday consumers alike.”

She notes that she particularly loves the clean lines, geometric forms, and functional beauty commonly spotted in mid-century design.

Iconic Pieces to Look Out For

The Nytillverkad collection is chock full of iconic pieces and bold colors, making it hard not to want every piece. We asked our two designers which ones they’re most excited for.

SOTENÄS Armchair 

If your aesthetic can be described as relaxed and retro, Stark the SOTENÄS armchair—which was first launched as the PUCK armchair in 1969—might be for you. Most recently available in yellow, the latest drop sees it updated in a bold, cherry red fabric.

“The warmth and impact of the red will transform any space,” says Stark, noting that its low, wide seat is actually roomy enough for two people.

Carroll also shared her love for this new addition, and imagines it in an office or a corner reading nook.

“It’s unexpected and when paired with a great modern floor lamp, it will become the favorite escape spot,” says Carroll.

GUTTANE Tables

If you’re looking for a new coffee table or side tables, Stark notes that the GUTTANE styles are a perfect option, thanks to their timeless design and modern functionality. Originally a part of the 1963 catalogue, these simple, elegant tables were once called NOVETTE.

“The characteristic little ledge also prevents magazines and cups from falling off the edge,” says Stark. “It’s all about combining functionality and good design.”

Carroll agrees, highlighting that she would particularly love to see these in a kids’ playroom.

“They would bring unexpected sophistication while still letting the fun shine through,” she says.

SKÅLBODA Armchair

For a sculptural conversation starter, Stark says she loves the SKÅLBODA armchair, which dates back to 1983 when it was called JÄRPEN. It’s now available in white, orange, or black.

“I love having pieces that feel like works of art and have their own unique texture, like the grid pattern on this one,” says Stark, who can’t wait to add it to her bedroom, paired with a cozy sheepskin throw.

GULLSUDARE Pendant 

Along with must-have furniture pieces, the Nytillverkad also has this GULLSUDARE pendant light fixture Stark calls one of her personal favorites, and insists she’ll be installing in her home.

“I love oversized statement lighting because it creates impact, and a rice paper lamp creates a chill vibe,” she says. ”I’m planning to hang it above my round dining table with boucle chairs to complete the look.”

The first IKEA rice paper lamp was released in 1969 and was simply called RISLAMPA, which translates to “rice lamp” in Swedish.

KÄLLARHALS Vases

Home accessories haven’t been excluded from the Nytillverkad collection, and Stark points to the KÄLLARHALS vase as an incredibly easy way to kick-off a vibrant and colorful spring refresh. First spotted in IKEA’s 1995 catalogue, the previously named SNURRA vase was created by Anna Efverlund.

“These glass pieces are classic enough that it’s a nice accent piece to add to a dining table or on a kitchen countertop with fresh tulips,” she says.

Carroll also pointed to these as a favorite, and says she can’t wait to use them for a playful pop in her sunroom.

“I love adding bold colors and patterns to my own home, but I know it can feel overwhelming for most, so I recommend starting with just one or two statement pieces,” says Carroll.

DYVLINGE Swivel Armchair 

If you’re looking to integrate a piece from the collection into the design of an existing room, Stark says she recommends the DYVLINGE swivel armchair. First presented as the MILA and called an “anti-stress armchair,” this fun and funky pick dates back to 1967.

“With the scale and low back, it makes it easier to add to an existing space,” says Stark.

Carroll says she personally loves the DYVLINGE in orange corduroy, and calls the chair first on her list for her own home.

“It’s a statement piece that looks comfortable and like a vintage original,” Carroll says.
