Interior designer, television personality, and author Joanna Gaines recently launched a bedding guide with the Magnolia team highlighting cozy linens and styling tips to help you create the ultimate bedroom retreat. The resource simplifies layered bedding and decor, helping you choose everything from crisp sheets and comforters to harmonious accents.
“I have learned over the years how essential the feel and design of our bedrooms are to setting the tone for our days,” says Gaines. “When you think about it, this is the space where you end one day and begin the next, so I’ve always tried to be intentional about what I bring in and what I take out of my bedroom.”
We spoke with Gaines to get some season-specific bedding insight, and she shared how to balance the patterns and neutrals from their collection.

Keys to a Magnolia-Inspired Bed Stack
Magnolia’s guide defines a well-designed “bed stack” as four main essentials that mix textiles, patterns, and colors:
- Sheet Sets: Sheets made with high-quality fabrics are the foundation.
- Duvets, Quilts, and Coverlets: Their guide helps you pick which design suits you.
- Pillow Shams: These elegant covers help tie the design together.
- Pillows & Throws: Mix in varied throws to finish the bed.
To achieve that mix-and-match, lived-in aesthetic, Gaines says to start with the grounding element that will tie everything together, then take that theme and pair it with complementary elements.
“Playing with patterns is all about balance. So, when it comes to bedding, I like to mix and match—a duvet in a solid color becomes more interesting when it’s playing off a pattern, so you can bring in that balance with a sheet set or pillows in a fun block print,” says Gaines. “Or you go the opposite way and start with a duvet or quilt in a pattern you really love and then the balance is layering in those solid colors and varying textures.”
Transitioning a Bed Stack by Season
We asked Gaines how someone can meaningfully transition their bedroom as the weather warms up, and she suggests you don’t need to reinvent the wheel—just make small changes here and there.
“When it comes to bedding, I keep it simple year-round. I rarely make big, dramatic changes here because it’s just not something that’s always top of mind,” says Gaines. “But I do like to make small shifts with the change of each season, which in the spring looks like swapping out my velvet quilt for a lighter throw or quilt at the end of the bed and looking for ways to bring in a seasonal pattern, typically through pillows or sheets.”
Shop the Collection
The bedding featured in the guide comes in high-quality cotton and linen meant for every season, and your investment should last for years (2-3 years for sheets and 3-5 years for covers).
To take the guesswork out, shop the bedding guide by color. Peaceful Retreat features soft blues, linens, and grays, Golden Hour comes in shades of ochre and cream, Natural Haven highlights several olive green tones, and Sweet Solace wows with pink and maroon.
