General Motors has recalled just 82 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vans because they may not adequately protect drivers in an accident.

The company tells federal safety regulators that “an impact beam located in the driver’s side door may have improper welds at the beam’s front connection point to the door.” If that beam can’t perform properly in an accident, the vans don’t have the advertised side-impact protection.

GM is not aware of any injuries or accidents related to the problem. A factory technician discovered it when inspecting a van under construction, and the company was able to narrow the problem down to vans built during a specific window. But, it says, “Up to 94 of these suspect vehicles were not contained at GM’s assembly plant. Eighty-two of these vehicles are in the U.S..”

Dealers will fix the problem by welding the beam correctly.

By law, dealers never charge for recall repairs.

Manufacturers attempt to contact every owner, but they don’t always reach them all with the news. Find out if your car needs any critical safety repairs at our recall center.
