Meghan Markle wears many hats—she’s an entrepreneur, activist, royal duchess, and actor, to name a few. While her endeavors are nothing short of impressive, Markle’s favorite jobs are much more ordinary: being a wife and mother. In her new show, With Love, Meghan, which premiered on Netflix on March 4, viewers get an inside look into what meals, desserts, and events Markle prepares for her family and friends.

The eight-episode show is full of useful tips and tricks for hosting, crafting, cooking, and gardening. While we love these tips, her heartfelt advice and the lessons she has learned throughout her life shine bright.

Here are five life lessons that have helped Markle become the person she is today.

    It’s All About Intentionality

A core tenet in Markle’s new show is slowing down and showing intentionality through thoughtful acts and gifts. She specifically talks about the importance of showing intentionality to loved ones who visit her Montecito home. “Whenever I have someone come and stay, one of my favorite things to do is prep the guest room,” she says. This looks like setting up snacks, towels, and spa-like bath salts and tea bags for her guests.

“The joy of hostessing, for me, is surprising people with moments that let them know I was really thinking of their whole experience from morning till evening,” says Markle. “I want everyone to come and feel really, really comforted when they’re in our house.”

The intentional gifts don’t end with hosting overnight guests. Markle shows recipes and DIYs like harvest baskets, gift bags, and dog biscuits to make for loved ones (and their pets!) for any reason. Aside from making gifts, Markle adds intentional touches to her events by handwriting menus and food labels.

    Make Mundane Moments Special

In episode seven, Markle emphasizes how easy it is to make small, simple moments special. In the episode, She prepares to host her friend Vicky Tsai, founder of skincare brand Tatcha, and shares that even in a time crunch, elevating simple ingredients and moments is key. For example, before Tsai arrived, Markle makes an easy, 4-ingredient coffee creamer for her friend and elevates store-boughten croissants by plating them alongside fresh strawberries and herbs. She also places different jams and preserves in separate bowls for a cleaner look.

“All of this is about how you can take something that’s every day and elevate it just a little bit,” says Markle. She also shows how elevating mundane moments can be simple and inexpensive. For example, she creates beautiful bouquets by mixing grocery store flowers and placing them in vases she already owns.

    Cooking and Hosting for Connection

While Markle’s show focuses on household activities, an underlying theme throughout the episodes is the importance of connection with family and community. Markle says she loves the act of hosting, but the best part is spending time and deepening relationships with loved ones.

From making cookies with Mindy Kaling to learning about Japanese polishing face masks with Vicky Tsai, Markle knows conversation with these friends takes precedence over perfecting any recipe or product. “Just being home and connecting with friends, making new friends—I’m just so grateful for that,” Markle says in the season’s final episode.

    Be Proud of Your Roots

In nearly every episode, Markle references her experiences growing up in Los Angeles. Episode three of the show, which features LA-based chef Roy Choi, is titled “Two Kids From LA.” Throughout the show, Markle shares memories of making friends in a culturally diverse city and spending time in their households. She also speaks fondly of her time in elementary and middle school, where she learned to garden in an urban setting.

Through sharing fond memories of her childhood and speaking with her Californian guests, it’s clear Markle loves and appreciates the city she grew up in. Recently, Markle and her husband, Prince Harry, showed support for the city by visiting residents who lost their homes in the LA wildfires. She also teamed up with singer Billie Eilish to help a 15-year-old who lost their prized Eilish concert merchandise in the fire. While Markle doesn’t live in LA anymore, she still embraces her LA roots, currently residing a drive away in Montecito, California.

    Never Stop Learning

“I’m just learning. I’ve always been curious,” says Markle in the final episode of the season. “Sharing all of those discoveries and everything I love with the people I love—it just brings me so much joy.”

Not only does she learn from professional chefs and homemakers, like learning how to make Korean fried chicken from chef Roy Choi, she also invites friends and family onto the show to share their practices and traditions. For instance, in episode seven, Vicky Tsai demonstrates how to make potstickers she made with her family growing up.

“This feels like a new chapter I’m so excited that I get to share, that I’ve been able to learn from all of you,” Markle says in the final episode. “All of that is part of that creativity that I’ve missed so much.”
