A new report from Xometry, a digital manufacturing marketplace, outlines how recent tariffs, reshoring efforts, and technology investments are reshaping the American manufacturing landscape.

According to CEO Randy Altschuler, nearly half (42%) of U.S. manufacturing CEOs report they have already reshored facilities. And another 19% are planning to follow suit. These insights stem from Xometry’s latest “American Manufacturing Resurgence” poll, conducted with Zogby in March.

Manufacturing reshoring as a result of tariffs

The ongoing reshoring movement in manufacturing has been bolstered by recent federal policies and tariffs intended to reduce reliance on foreign supply chains and reinvigorate domestic production. As a result, America’s estimated 500,000 small- and mid-sized manufacturers are seeing increased demand for local production capabilities.

In parallel, 70% of surveyed manufacturers say they are adopting AI technologies to streamline planning and operations. Automation also ranks high among priorities. Of those investing in AI, most report a positive return on investment, with 63% believing that AI and related technologies will be transformational for their operations.

Talent needs are shifting as well. The report notes a growing demand for software engineers and data scientists over traditional machinists, reflecting the sector’s evolution toward a more tech-enabled environment.

Altschuler emphasized Xometry’s role in facilitating these transitions through its online marketplace and Thomasnet platform, both designed to help companies scale domestic sourcing and navigate tariff-related complexities.

“The acceleration of reshoring, the adoption of new technologies, and the push for skilled labor mark a pivotal moment for American manufacturing,” Altschuler says. “We are optimistic about the road ahead.”

Xometry currently works with over 68,000 buyers and 4,375 manufacturers worldwide.
