Lallemand Inc. has selected commercetools to develop a new digital commerce platform for its North American Baking unit.

Lallemand is a global manufacturer of microorganisms used in sectors including baking, wine, brewing, biofuels, and animal nutrition. Founded in the late 19th century, the privately held company operates in over 50 countries and employs more than 5,000 people. Its core business centers on the development, production, and marketing of yeasts, bacteria, fungi, and related derivatives. Lallemand has traditionally relied on offline sales but is now increasing its investment in ecommerce and digital tools to meet changing customer expectations and reduce operational inefficiencies.

The new platform, which it developed in partnership with commercetools and systems integrator EPAM Systems, replaces manual phone and email-based order processes with a centralized B2B portal. Additionally, the platform supports more than 1,000 products across various brands, currencies, and regions. The companies designed it to streamline operations and enable future growth across Lallemand’s business units.

How Lallemand is investing in B2B ecommerce

Caroline Fortin, director of customer experience at Lallemand, said the initiative is part of a broader digital strategy.

“We needed a commerce solution capable of managing complex business scenarios while scaling alongside our global growth,” Fortin said. The system also gives sales representatives new digital tools to support customers and improve delivery service.

The implementation follows other recent digital efforts by Lallemand, including past ecommerce collaborations with partners such as The Reference, aimed at creating scalable, future-ready platforms. The company’s move toward composable commerce — modular systems that allow flexibility in digital operations — reflects a broader trend among global manufacturers shifting toward online channels.

The baking division is the first business unit to adopt the commercetools platform, with further rollouts planned, including eventual expansion into consumer-facing brands. The platform is built using MACH architecture (microservices, API-first, cloud-native, and headless), a standard increasingly favored in enterprise ecommerce for its scalability and adaptability.

Lallemand’s adoption of a digital-first model is part of a wider transformation across industrial sectors, as companies seek to modernize customer engagement, reduce friction in ordering processes, and support international operations through centralized digital infrastructure.
