Gliding along the Italian countryside is a true icon of travel. The epitome of elegance, this historic vessel is engineered to spark curiosity. Detailed in glossy blue paint with golden contrast, the impressive 16-carriage train is a treasure trove of history, but it’s also quite mysterious. The train holds dialogue from half a century, particularly within the famed Bar Car ‘3674,’ where the piano’s gentle notes lull one into a state of quiet reflection. It’s all part of the magic of Belmond Train’s Venice Simplon-Orient-Express.

While the views from the window are unforgettable, there’s something truly idyllic about the train’s decor. The fully-restored carriages have left no detail unturned, inspiring guests with authentic design from another era. The art deco theme mimics the streamlined sophistication of the 1930s, boasting polished mahogany walls against luxurious velvet textures and ornate trimmings. Made for solitaries and travelers alike, this excursion is for the wanderer who delights in the warmth of home. Before lying down for a rest in the meticulously-crafted sleeping quarters, guests savor a cocktail out of the finest coupe and slip into character.

    Trains

Coming later this spring, this charming abode on wheels has a covetable lineup on its roster. Belmond Trains presents new excursions throughout Italy, including a three-night journey to the heart of wine country—the rolling hills of Tuscany. Beginning May 11, attendees climb aboard the Orient Express at the Paris train station and are greeted by a glass of the finest champagne. They’ll settle into either the Historic Cabins, Suites, or Opulent Grand Suites which feature marble ensuite bathrooms and 24-hour cabin stewards. As the sun rises the next morning, they will awake to views of Tuscan vistas. A local breakfast is served in the comfort of their cabins with a seasonal menu by renowned Michelin-star French chef, Jean Imbert. Meanwhile, the train makes its seamless journey onward to the historic city of Arezzo.

After a short transfer, the itinerary leads to a medieval landmark of Tuscany, the small city of Siena, where guests can savor historical nuances and quiet quaintness. A light lunch offers a sampling of the region’s favorites, tantalizing the taste buds and providing nourishment before a day of sights. First stop is the UNESCO historic center before moving onto the Palazzo Pannocchieschi d’Elci, a 13th-century palace with views of the iconic horseracing square, Piazza del Campo. The eventful day winds down at Belmond’s farm estate, Castello di Casole, where the vastness of vineyards and olive groves invites a rich sense of ease and stillness. Guests will hang their hats at the calming locale for two nights in a charming suite overlooking the lush grounds.

The romance continues as the day fades to night, when guests step outside to partake in an exclusive stargazing event in the estate’s personal amphitheater. Named “one of the most beautiful skies in Italy” by Astronomitaly, the network of astronomical tourism, Tuscany is revered for its beauty and allure. Using telescopes to pinpoint galaxies, planets and stars from above, this bonding activity may ignite deeper feelings or spark a connection. Day two excites with a festival in the courtyard or “Festa del Villaggio” where local artists, musicians and entertainers convene for a truly authentic cultural experience. On the final morning, a leisurely walk through the estate offers a serene conclusion to the Tuscany experience before guests part ways and conclude this three-night Italian dream.

Belmond is making room for new excitement by rekindling a favorite route. Coming this June, the train will celebrate the return of its highly-anticipated Portofino journey. The excursion takes attendees along a memorable loop through the beautiful coastal fishing town in the Italian Riviera, landing at the waterfront Belmond Hotel, Splendido. The train’s new sleeper carriage, L’Observatoire, will offer an exclusive overnight experience for both Tuscany and Portofino travellers alike. Designed by renowned French street artist JR, it’s unlike anything we’ve seen before from Belmond and the first time an artist has thoughtfully designed a cabin on board. The private carriage will feature a bedroom with double bed, an ensuite bathroom, wardrobe, reclining daybed, lounge area, library with book selection by French publisher Gallimard, and secret tea room with a fireplace.

Prices for Paris to Tuscany start from £9,350 ($11,380) per person and include a stay on the train’s Historic Cabin and two nights in a Junior Suite at Castello di Casole. Prices for Paris to Portofino start from £10,400 ($12,650) per person in a Historic Cabin and two nights in a Premium Room at Splendido. Both itineraries include an overnight journey and signature menus curated by Chef Jean Imbert. The Tuscany itinerary includes breakfast and lunch while the Portofino itinerary includes breakfast and an exclusive Gala Dinner with entertainment curated by Chef Corrado Corti.

Belmond Trains comprise six sleeper trains and two day trains and run seasonally from March to December. The most frequent European journeys include London, Rome, Florence, Paris, Venice, Prague, Vienna and Budapest. Belmond began in 1977 when James B. Sherwood purchased two sleeping cars from a Sotheby’s auction in Monte Carlo. It was love at first sight. The brand invites all travel lovers to partake in the splendor, as the train weaves through Europe’s most beloved landscapes and unveils unforgettable stories within its treasured walls.
