Ford issued a recall covering just three Explorer SUVs from model year 2025 because their front brake calipers may be loose.
The company told federal safety officials in a filing, “Under worst-case conditions, the brake caliper may lose contact with the brake rotor and potentially lose brake pressure in the front brake circuit.”
The rear brakes have enough power to stop the car without the front brakes. But stopping will take a longer distance than drivers are used to, which could contribute to an accident.
Ford also warns that a loose caliper could come into contact with other wheel parts. That could grind on them and “impact the structural integrity of the wheel.”
Drivers might hear clunking sounds from the front wheels as the problem worsens.
Dealers will fix the issue by inspecting the wheels and calipers, replacing any worn parts, and tightening everything to the specified torque.
