I see you’re from Toronto. What’s the chatter about the United States there these days?
It’s hard not to pay attention to Trump — he’s pretty loud. Yet when walking around New York, I didn’t hear anyone talk about the mayoral race. It’s like no one brought it up. In Canada when there are elections, you see signs everywhere: on the lawn, the grass, the highway. You hear it. I didn’t even have the feeling that an election was happening here.

    Any gripes with your trip?
My biggest pet peeve is the subway. You’ve got to work on it. Just make a nice subway, make it clean, make it make sense, make the stations appealing, and it’s going to go smoother in the city. I’m telling you.

Working at a pizza place, have you become a bit of a pizza expert?

Well, I personally like to get a side of tomato sauce and then dip my crust in it after I’m done eating my pizza. It’s like a mini-breadstick that comes with the pizza. It’s so good, especially with Sicilian slices.

Has anything about New York surprised you?

What surprised me is the trash. Trash in the street. I mean, maybe it’s a bad surprise.

Do you come to New York often?

I come twice a year to visit my friend Monét, who lives in Harlem. We usually spend the day going to museums we’ve already been to. That’s what I prefer to do here. I’m a museum girl, and I really like to hit up MoMA.

    Do you like practicing law?

No two days are the same, which I like. I also enjoy the mentorship aspect. A lot of students who went to Howard or Cornell, where I went, have reached out to me for advice on pursuing law. It feels really good that I can be that person for them now. If it wasn’t for the students I looked up on LinkedIn, I probably wouldn’t have gone to Cornell.

What’s life like in Miami right now?

It’s becoming more and more expensive. People can’t afford to live there. You can see the clear distinction between the haves and have-nots. If I go to a bar or want to stop at a happy hour, I see less and less people. People are bracing themselves.

    How’s your trip going?

Amazing, amazing. I’m here for 14 days. I’ve been walking around on Fifth Avenue and also going to Times Square and visiting the Statue of Liberty. We took so many tours that took us around the Bronx, Brooklyn, Soho, and Dumbo. We visited that Little Island and Chelsea Market. It’s my first time in New York.
