Tax automation software provider Avalara has appointed Adrianna Burrows as chief marketing officer (CMO) and Shahan Parshad as chief information officer (CIO), signaling a push to expand globally and advance its AI and technology infrastructure.

The company announced the executive hires July 10. Burrows joins as executive vice president and reports to Avalara president Ross Tennenbaum. Parshad will serve as senior vice president and CIO, reporting to chief technology officer Danny Fields.

The leadership changes come as Avalara seeks to scale its AI-enabled tax compliance platform. The platform supports more than 43,000 customers in over 75 countries. The company is focusing on modernizing IT systems, expanding brand presence, and meeting growing regulatory complexity across global markets.

“Adrianna and Shahan’s leadership will be key as Avalara advances our marketing and technology strategy to fuel growth and innovation,” Tennenbaum said.

About the new Avalara CMO and CIO

Burrows has experience from a range of technology companies, most recently Shopify, where she led global marketing efforts. Her previous roles include senior positions at:

    • PayScale
    • Cornerstone OnDemand
    • Stack Overflow
    • Microsoft

At Microsoft, she oversaw the launch of Windows 10 as general manager of global marketing.

And at Avalara, she will be responsible for driving demand generation, strengthening the company’s brand globally, and expanding market awareness of its tax compliance solutions.

Parshad previously served as CIO at Airtable, leading internal system upgrades during a period of fast growth. He also spent over four years at Confluent, where he built and led business technology and data organization, supporting the company’s IPO and international expansion.

In his new role, Parshad will lead Avalara’s global IT and enterprise systems functions. His focus will include improving scalability, enhancing security, and supporting AI-driven innovation across the company’s infrastructure.

Avalara’s compliance platform integrates with more than 1,400 systems, including ecommerce, ERP, and billing software. The company is investing in AI and automation to support its core services — tax calculation, filing, document management, and content delivery.

The new appointments reflect Avalara’s ongoing effort to strengthen its operational foundation and adapt to growing demand from businesses managing increasingly complex tax environments.
