As the leaves start to change, your home goes through a transformation, too. Gone are the spring porch planters and airy summer decor. Instead, it’s time to make your home cozy, warm, and ready for fall.
This year, you can make styling your home for the season even easier by following a little bit of expert advice. HomeGoods Featured Finder, lifestyle content creator, and fall enthusiast Steffy Degreff, shares all her favorite tips for easily incorporating all of autumn’s comforts into your home’s decor.
1. Switch Out Artwork
You might not think of artwork as something that can be swapped out regularly, but incorporating fall-inspired pieces is an easy and effective way to make your home feel (pumpkin) spiced up for the season “In the fall, that might mean [adding] a warm-toned abstract, a vintage-inspired landscape, or even a textured piece placed in a wood or brass frame to bring in extra coziness,” Degreff says.
She also recommends experimenting with different frames. Darker options—like black or burnished gold—are sleek and moody, while natural wood frames feel organic and warm. For example, swapping silver and white for gold and brass is one way of easily bringing in warm fall tones.
2. Choose a Fall Color Palette
Speaking of color: Whether you rely on one bold accent or several, adding a few decor items in seasonal shades is a great way to warm up your space. On top of the traditional orange and dusty red decor, consider adding violet and navy to the mix this fall.
Degreff suggests doing this with minimal effort by using linens and centerpieces. “Maybe it’s a burnt orange knit throw blanket in the living room, a rust-toned woven runner in the kitchen, and a set of terracotta ceramic vases on the dining table,” she says. “That one thread ties the whole home together without it feeling too matchy-matchy.”
3. Bring Seasonal Foliage Inside
Incorporating seasonal flowers and plants throughout your space is one of the most low-lift ways to decorate your home for autumn. Whether you’re using Trader Joe’s mums to decorate your dining table or testing out fall centerpiece ideas, adding botanical elements is an inexpensive and fun way to bring the outdoors in.
“Rich, leafy garlands bring instant warmth over a doorway and under countertops; tall branches in earthy tones add height and texture in a vase; and dried grasses or moody autumn blooms layered into a tablescape make the whole space feel seasonal and inviting,” Degreff says.
4. Layer on Textures
“Nothing says fall like a little texture play,” Degreff says. “It’s the secret to making a room feel warm and intentional.” This fall, throw a variety of knit, faux fur, and woven blankets on your bed or couch to make it look softer and more inviting.
In addition to blankets, Degreff suggests adding a textured rug and a variety of throw pillows to your space. Mix and match fabrics so there’s a wide range of textures in one area: Pair boucle, sherpa, and faux fur throw pillows with soft, fluffy rugs to layer multiple textures and reach peak coziness.
5. Use Everyday Items as Decor
“The things you use every day can double as some of the best seasonal accents when you style them thoughtfully,” Degreff notes. “For me, it’s mugs, and HomeGoods always has the cutest and most affordable seasonal choices, from pumpkin-shaped ceramic mugs to glass styles with autumn florals or even cozy woodland creatures.” She recommends hanging your favorite seasonal mugs or styling them on an open shelf so they’re easy to see.
You can also put a seasonal spin on your go-to serveware: Turn your favorite tray or pitcher into a vessel for fall decor. Candleholders and candelabras instantly create ambient lighting that will warm up your home during the dark evenings. You can even set your favorite themed dishes out for display.
